Designer Spotlight: David Abad for B.lux

David Abad is a contributing designer for the Spanish lighting manufacturer, B.lux. Born and raised in Barcelona in 1967 to a family of manufacturers, Abad was exposed early on to the industrial side of business. At the same time, he was immersed in a vibrant Mediterranean design scene, that would influence his taste for design.

Between 1997 and 2011, Abad led his own business (DAB) designing and producing lamps and working on special lighting projects. He went on to create David Abad Design, where he started to collaborate with companies from different fields, focusing on high quality design. During this time, he built a strong relationship with B.lux, selling many of his designs to them that eventually elevated his international recognition. Abad utilized his training in design and engineering to bring a frank and realistic vision to life, without neglecting their aesthetic and functional aspects. He’s created over twenty-five noteworthy lighting designs for B.lux and has received numerous international design recognition, such as the Red Dot, iF Design, Design Plus, and Good Design.

From an interview with Global Lighting, “I’m curious and I like to experiment with materials,” he says. “I’m not afraid of any material… I love aesthetics,” he states. “I love surfaces, materials and well-made things.”
